<\/a> John et Donna McHugh ont c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 leur 50e anniversaire de mariage au City Centre Co-op (maintenant Unified Saint John). Donna McHugh ne pr\u00e9voit pas d\u00e9m\u00e9nager de sit\u00f4t de la Unified Saint John Co-op. \u00c0 74 ans, Donna si\u00e8ge encore au conseil d\u2019administration et elle a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9\u00a0dans les r\u00e9cents changements apport\u00e9s \u00e0 la structure de la coop\u00e9rative. Cette ann\u00e9e,\u00a0elle a re\u00e7u un prix pour ses services \u00e0 l\u2019habitation coop\u00e9rative\u00a0au Nouveau-Brunswick. \u00abLa coop\u00e9rative ne cesse jamais de\u00a0m\u2019\u00e9tonner\u00bb, d\u00e9clare-t-elle. \u00abC\u2019est agr\u00e9able d\u2019\u00eatre reconnue.\u00bb Donna et son \u00e9poux John faisaient du camping il y a 27\u00a0ans quand son fils lui a dit qu\u2019il avait envoy\u00e9 une demande\u00a0d\u2019adh\u00e9sion \u00e0 la coop\u00e9rative pour le couple. \u00abJe ne savais pas\u00a0ce qu\u2019\u00e9tait une coop\u00e9rative\u00bb, dit-elle, et elle \u00e9tait certaine\u00a0qu\u2019elle ne voulait pas y vivre. Maintenant, elle ne veut plus\u00a0partir. \u00abTant que je serai capable, que j\u2019aurai encore toutes\u00a0mes facult\u00e9s et que je pourrai me le permettre, je resterai.\u00a0\u00a0Je suis en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 ici. J\u2019ai des amis et j\u2019aime vivre ici.\u00bb L\u2019\u00e9poux de Donna est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 il y a un peu plus d\u2019un an.\u00a0Il \u00e9tait bien connu dans la coop\u00e9rative, un artisan accompli\u00a0qui \u00e9tait populaire aupr\u00e8s des enfants. \u00abIl \u00e9tait connu comme\u00a0le maire d\u2019Elliott Row\u00bb, pr\u00e9cise-t-elle en riant. \u00abMoi, je n\u2019ai\u00a0jamais eu de titre.\u00bb. Donna reconna\u00eet qu\u2019il est difficile de vivre\u00a0seule – elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 mari\u00e9e pendant 54 ans – mais la coop\u00e9rative\u00a0est maintenant son chez-soi. \u00abJ\u2019aime mieux \u00eatre ici avec mes\u00a0souvenirs qu\u2019ailleurs sans eux.\u00bb La coop\u00e9rative ne repr\u00e9sente pas que des souvenirs pour\u00a0elle. Donna a \u00e9galement \u00e9crit une page d\u2019histoire. En tant\u00a0que membre du comit\u00e9 directeur qui a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 la fusion de\u00a0huit coop\u00e9ratives, elle a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le essentiel pour aider \u00e0\u00a0cr\u00e9er la Unified Saint John Co-op. \u00abHonn\u00eatement, lorsque\u00a0nous avons amorc\u00e9 ce projet, nous n\u2019\u00e9tions pas tr\u00e8s chauds\u00a0\u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e\u00bb, indique-t-elle. \u00abJe n\u2019aimais pas l\u2019id\u00e9e et je me\u00a0disais \u201cils vont devoir me convaincre sur cette question\u201d,\u00a0mais lorsque j\u2019en ai appris plus \u00e0 ce sujet, je pouvais voir\u00a0la logique de la fusion.\u00bb \u00abSur le plan financier, c\u2019\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s logique. Les petites\u00a0coop\u00e9ratives ne sont pas toujours capables d\u2019obtenir\u00a0du financement pour effectuer des r\u00e9parations majeures.\u00a0Nous avons r\u00e9alis\u00e9 quatre ou cinq de nos principaux\u00a0projets cet automne. Voici comment j\u2019expliquais la cette\u00a0situation : \u201cC\u2019est comme si nous \u00e9tions dans la baie de\u00a0Fundy. J\u2019aimerais mieux \u00eatre dans un navire de croisi\u00e8re\u00a0que seule dans une chaloupe? \u00c7a brasse beaucoup et\u00a0c\u2019est tr\u00e8s venteux. Seul, on pourrait se noyer.\u00bb La fusion a \u00e9t\u00e9 officialis\u00e9e le 1er janvier 2016. Un membre\u00a0de chacune des petites coop\u00e9ratives si\u00e9geait au conseil\u00a0de la Unified Saint John Co-op. \u00abC\u2019est diff\u00e9rent\u00bb, souligne\u00a0Donna. \u00abNous ne sommes pas aussi \u00e9troitement soud\u00e9s\u00a0qu\u2019auparavant, mais sur le plan financier nous sommes\u00a0plus solides. Il faudrait peut-\u00eatre avoir une personne qui\u00a0serait charg\u00e9e de rassembler les gens, de leur rendre\u00a0visite et de v\u00e9rifier s\u2019ils vont bien.\u00bb Donna travaille dans un march\u00e9 local deux jours par\u00a0semaine et, m\u00eame si elle ne conduit pas, elle trouve qu\u2019il\u00a0est facile de prendre l\u2019autobus ou de marcher jusqu\u2019au\u00a0centre-ville de Saint John. \u00abLa vie dans une coop\u00e9rative\u00a0est remplie de surprises. La coop\u00e9rative traite vraiment\u00a0bien ses membres et c\u2019est un endroit s\u00fbr pour \u00e9lever des\u00a0enfants.
